The Nursery Essentials Checklist
The baby sleeps beside you for the first months, so the nursery's first job is changing and storage, not sleep. Set it up so the things you reach for a dozen times a day are within one arm's length of the pad, and so the lighting at night is dim enough that nobody fully wakes up.
Everything below is sorted by the job it does. The furniture is the expensive part and the right registry item; the rest is small and mostly about not having to leave the room.

What you can skip
The part most lists leave out.
- A changing table
A dresser with a pad on it is the same thing, and it outlives the diaper years.
- Crib bumpers, pillows and a bedding set
Nothing soft goes in the crib. This is safe-sleep guidance, not taste.
- A wipe warmer
Room temperature is fine, and warm wipes create a baby who won't tolerate cold ones.
- A toy box full of toys
A newborn wants faces and voices. Toys come with the months.
- Matching everything
A room that works at 3am beats a room that photographs well. You can have both, but choose the first one first.
- A second monitor camera
Later, if they move rooms. Not now.
