The Best Crib
Here is the thing the crib industry would rather not lead with: every new crib sold in the US must meet the same federal standard — IKEA prints the citation, 16 CFR 1219, right on its $130 crib's page. A $849 crib is not safer than a $129 one. What you are paying for is wood, joinery, looks, and how far the thing converts.
The hidden price is the conversion kit. 'Converts to a toddler bed' can mean the kit is in the box (Babyletto, IKEA, Nestig) or that it costs $89 to $199 later (DaVinci, Pottery Barn) — and by the time you need it, discontinued kits become eBay hunts. The table says which is which.
Every figure comes from the brand's own page, numbered at the end. One maker publishes no price on its own site; that cell is blank rather than borrowed. And the mattress is sold separately almost everywhere — our registry checklist already carries a pick for that.
Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy through them we may earn a commission, at no cost to you. It never changes which products we pick. Every figure in the table is taken from the manufacturer's own page; the numbered sources are listed at the end.

Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 Convertible Crib
Who it's for. The default pick, and the reason it is our registry checklist's crib: solid New Zealand pine, the toddler-bed kit already in the box, hidden hardware so no screw heads show, and Greenguard Gold stated on the page. Mid-century enough to photograph, boring enough to last.
Skip it if you want the road to a full-size bed — the Hudson stops at daybed.
Converts to a toddler bed and a daybed, so it's the last bed you buy for a while.

Who it's for. The Hudson with rounder corners and little tapered feet — same pine, same included kit, same certifications, chosen on looks alone. Pick whichever one your nursery wants; the spec sheet barely moves.
Skip it if you were deciding between this and the Hudson on anything but taste. Do not — they are the same crib in different clothes.
The Hudson's rounder-cornered sibling: same pine, same included kit, softer look.

Who it's for. The heirloom look for real-world money: the classic spindle silhouette in solid pine, eight finishes including a forest green and a blush, wheels in the box, and the lightest full-size crib here at 36 pounds — you can actually move it to vacuum.
Skip it if you want the kit included — the toddler conversion is $89 later — or a count of mattress positions, which DaVinci does not state for this one.
The heirloom spindle look for a quarter of the boutique price, with wheels in the box.

Who it's for. The longest road in the table: crib, toddler bed, daybed, then an actual full-size bed. If the plan is one purchase from newborn to grade school, this is that plan at a sane price.
Skip it if you count the kits: toddler at $89 and full-size at $129 are both extra, so the true four-stage price is about $517 — still fair, just not $299.
The one that goes all the way to a full-size bed — the longest road in the table.

Who it's for. The honesty benchmark for the whole category: $129.99, solid beech, the rail conversion included, and the federal safety citation printed right on the page. If the budget is real, buy this without shame and spend the difference on the mattress.
Skip it if you want finish options (it comes in beech), more than two mattress heights, or furniture-store looks. It is exactly what it costs, in both directions.
Solid beech for $130 with the conversion kit already in the box. The honest budget answer.

Who it's for. The one that is furniture first: mortise-and-tenon and tongue-and-groove joinery, solid poplar or eucalyptus depending on finish, 77 pounds of it. This is the crib for a nursery being furnished, not equipped.
Skip it if the math bothers you: $599 plus a $199 toddler kit is Hudson-times-two for a crib that converts less far.
Mortise-and-tenon furniture that happens to be a crib. The heaviest thing here, in the way heirlooms are.

Who it's for. The everything-in-the-box answer: it starts as a mini crib with its own mattress included, grows into a full crib, then a toddler bed — every kit in the carton, optional wheels, solid Brazilian pine. For small spaces that will not stay small, nothing here matches it.
Skip it if $849 for a crib is not the budget, or you want a standard crib from day one — the mini stage is the point, and you pay for it.
Mini crib to full crib to toddler bed with every kit and the mini mattress included — the whole road in one box.

Who it's for. The sculpture: the iconic oval in FSC beech, on lockable wheels, rails coming off as the child grows, stated to age five. It is the only crib here anyone will recognize across the room — and the only one whose mattress is proprietary.
Skip it if you price the system: $849 plus a $329 oval mattress that fits nothing else, and standard sheets will not fit either. The shape is the product; the shape is also the lock-in.
The iconic oval, on wheels, sized to last to age five.

Who it's for. The big-box five-in-one: solid reclaimed pine, three mattress heights, eight finishes, and a shape that ends as a full-size bed. Dream On Me publishes no price on its own site — it lives at retail, usually well under everything above.
Skip it if you read 'five in one' as 'in the box': the toddler rail, stabilizer, and full-size rails are all sold separately, and at retail prices the à-la-carte total deserves a look before you celebrate the sticker.
Solid pine and five configurations at a big-box price. The rails are sold separately; the bones are real.

- Safety is settled; stop shopping for it. Every new US crib meets 16 CFR 1219 — the $129 IKEA says so on the page. Spend your attention on wood, kits, and conversions instead, and put the savings into the mattress, which the baby actually touches.
- Price the kit with the crib. 'Converts!' with a sold-separately kit is a deferred cost between $89 and $199 — and kits for discontinued cribs vanish. If you know you will convert, included-kit cribs (Babyletto, IKEA, Nestig) close that risk today.
- Mattress positions are your back, then their safety. The top height saves your spine for the newborn months; the bottom becomes mandatory the day they can pull to stand. Two positions does the job; four does it more gently.
- Buy the mattress separately and deliberately — almost no crib includes one, and flat, firm, and exactly-sized matters more than anything about the frame. Our registry checklist carries the pick.
- A used crib is a used standard. The current federal rule dates to 2011; a hand-me-down older than that, or anything with a drop side, is a no regardless of sentiment.
- The oval is a commitment. The Stokke is beautiful and everything that touches it — mattress, sheets — must be Stokke's. Know that going in and it will not annoy you later.
